What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a structured mental health treatment option that offers full-day mental health treatment, five days a week, without sleeping overnight in a clinical facility.

PHP is the highest level of outpatient mental health treatment available. It bridges the gap between traditional outpatient therapy and inpatient care. This makes PHP an idea choice for anyone who needs intensive mental health care, but does not require 24-hour clinical supervision.

The PHP level of care helps people manage depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and other mental health challenges in a safe, supportive environment.

Who Can Benefit from PHP treatment:

  • People who have depression, anxiety, or another mental health disorder compromising their quality of life.
  • Those who need more help than weekly therapy or IOP provides.
  • People who have completed residential inpatient mental health treatment.
  • Those who need structured treatment but not 24‑hour supervision
  • People seeking the most effective mental health treatment possible without overnight stays.

How Does Our PHP Program Work?

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) offers intensive, structured mental health care while still allowing you to sleep at home and keep your evenings and weekends free. It provides a level of support that feels immersive and steady, helping you focus on healing without stepping away from your life entirely.

When you begin PHP mental health treatment at The Brandywine Center, our team completes a thorough assessment and builds a care plan that reflects your needs and goals. The program runs Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 3 PM, giving you full‑time therapeutic support during the day and the comfort of returning home each night.

We offer evidence‑based therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), group sessions, psychiatric care, and medication management. Each service gives you practical tools you can use right away, helping you build confidence, stability, and resilience both inside and outside the program.

Is a Partial Hospitalization Program Right for Me?

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is designed for people who need more support than traditional outpatient care but don’t need 24‑hour supervision. It’s often the right fit for those stepping down from inpatient treatment or managing moderate to severe symptoms of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and other mental health challenges. to our program, we conduct a clinical assessment to determine the best fit for a level of care.

You might be a good candidate for our PHP if you:

  • Have a stable home but need structured mental health support.

Building on Your Progress After PHP

Completing our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) marks a meaningful step forward, but your recovery continues to grow beyond this point. At The Brandywine Center, we believe lasting progress comes from steady support and thoughtful next steps. We help you move into the level of care that fits your needs so you stay connected to guidance, resources, and a community that understands your journey.

Continuing Care in IOP or Outpatient

After PHP, many people move into our intensive outpatient program (IOP) or traditional outpatient therapy. These options offer structure and accountability while giving you more room to manage daily life. We also provide alumni support groups and ongoing access to therapeutic services, helping you keep practicing your skills and strengthening the progress you’ve made.

Research shows that continued care after structured treatment supports long‑term stability and continued growth. Note that recovery unfolds over time, not in a single moment. It’s best thought of as a journey rather than a destination. Staying connected to outpatient care, peer support, or therapy helps you maintain momentum and build lasting improvements in mental health.

Support That Stays With You

At The Brandywine Center, we make sure you feel supported long after PHP ends. Whether you move into IOP, join our alumni groups, or continue individual therapy, you’ll have a team beside you, offering guidance and encouragement as you keep growing.
Below are the options for continued care and ongoing support available after completing our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP):

Regular sessions with a therapist, which may include individual, group, or family therapy to maintain progress and manage everyday stressors

Ongoing appointments with a psychiatrist to monitor and adjust medications as needed, ensuring that the therapeutic benefits continue without significant side effects.

Access to peer-led or therapist-led support groups where individuals can share experiences and strategies in a supportive environment.

Continued mental health support through online platforms, offering flexibility and accessibility for counseling and therapy sessions from home.

Programs specifically designed to recognize and manage triggers and symptoms that might lead to a relapse, helping to maintain stability.

Assistance from a case manager to help navigate life transitions, connect with community resources, and coordinate care among different service providers.

Guidance on nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle choices that support mental health and overall well-being.

Ongoing support and education for family members to understand mental health conditions better and learn how to support their loved ones effectively.
