What Are Phobias?
Phobias are a type of anxiety disorder that are characterized by an intense and uncontrollable fear of an object, activity, or specific situation. The phobia causes tremendous panic and fear in a person’s life, and its impact has lasted for six months or longer.
Phobias cause a person either to endure high anxiety when dealing with the object, activity, or situation, or they avoid dealing with it altogether. Phobias can be centered on a variety of topics.
About 9.1% of U.S. Adults Experienced a Specific Phobia in the Last Year
According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), “An estimated 9.1% of U.S. adults had specific phobia in the past year.” Furthermore, “An estimated 12.5% of U.S. adults experience specific phobia at some time in their lives.”
A specific phobia can center around something that doesn’t happen very often in a person’s life, such as encountering a snake. Other phobias can cause a constant negative impact on the individual’s life. For example, if they have to drive to their job and other places on a regular basis, but they have developed a fear of driving, this causes a real dilemma in how to handle the phobia. If the person needs to travel for work but has a fear of flying, that can cause difficulties in their career paths.
How Are Phobias Treated?
When someone enters treatment for phobias, they tend to do better when they have options for more than one type of therapy. An initial assessment by the admissions team will determine which types of therapy will help them meet their treatment goals.
The types of therapy we offer include:
- Psychiatry
- Individual Therapy
- Group Therapy
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)
- Genetic Testing
- Holistic Mental Health Treatment
- Red Light Therapy
- Family Therapy

- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
Phobia Treatment Programs
Not everyone requires the same level of care when it comes to attending phobia treatment in Wilmington. We offer three types of phobia treatment programs to meet the needs of as many people as possible. We make it convenient for people to enroll in one of our levels of care and then move seamlessly to the next one, if necessary.
Our phobia treatment programs include:
- Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): Our highest level of care works well for people who have completed a residential program or do not need one. PHP provides comprehensive care that includes options for multiple types of therapy. Sessions take place on Monday through Friday from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
- Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): A step below PHP, this level of care offers support for people who need to attend therapy sessions several times per week. It offers many of the same types of therapy modalities that are provided in PHP. IOP lasts from eight to twelve weeks, with sessions taking place several times per week.
- Outpatient Program (OP): Our lowest level of care works well for people who only require one or two therapy sessions per week. OP is often the final step in treatment for mental health disorders like phobias.
