What is a Mood Disorder?
A mood disorder affects the way a person experiences and manages their emotions. Instead of moving through feelings naturally, someone may get stuck in a state like depression or mania for hours or even days. These intense shifts can create stress, strain relationships, and make work or school feel overwhelming. Many people misunderstand mood disorders, which can leave the individual feeling isolated or judged.
Nearly one in ten people in the United States lives with a mood disorder. Without proper diagnosis and treatment, symptoms can worsen and lead to a significant drop in quality of life. Some people may even begin to feel hopeless. Getting professional support early can make a meaningful difference.
Types of Mood Disorders
Effective mood disorder treatment in Wilmington addresses several different conditions. Each one has its own pattern of symptoms, yet they all involve difficulty regulating emotional states.
Common types of mood disorders include:
- Bipolar Disorder
- Major Depressive Disorder
- Seasonal Affective Disorder
- Postpartum Depression
- Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
- Dysthymia
- Cyclothymic Disorder
- Substance Induced Depression
Before treatment begins, a licensed mental health clinician will complete a thorough assessment to determine the specific mood disorder and guide the best course of care.

Our Mood Disorder Treatment Programs in Wilmington, DE
At The Brandywine Center, we offer three levels of outpatient care to meet the needs of our community. All of our programs allow you to live at home and come to our Wilmington facility for your sessions. This gives you structure and support while still keeping you connected to your daily life.
The levels of care include:
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP):
Our highest level of outpatient care. PHP offers many of the same benefits as a residential program while allowing you to return home each evening. Sessions run Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP):
A mid‑level option that uses many of the same therapies as PHP. You attend for a few hours per day on several weekdays. IOP offers strong support while still giving you room to manage work, school, or family responsibilities.
Outpatient Program (OP):
Our most flexible level of care. OP is designed for people who are ready to step down from more intensive treatment. One or two sessions each week help you strengthen the skills you have learned and stay grounded as you move forward.
How is a Mood Disorder Diagnosed?
If you are concerned that you may have a mood disorder, the first step is a professional assessment. You can speak with your doctor or request a referral to a therapist or psychiatrist. During the evaluation, the clinician will ask about your symptoms, how long they have been present, and how they affect your daily life. This information helps determine whether a mood disorder diagnosis is appropriate and what type of treatment may help.
